Dual respect
Participants learn to value and respect themselves when they’re treated with respect and are given the opportunity to exercise control over their own actions and lives. As they mature, participants respect others (in diverse roles and for their different contributions) who’ve treated them with respect.

Empowerment
Coaches provide opportunities and encouragement for participants to develop leadership and decision-making skills and to exercise their full range of abilities.

Discipline
Coaches commit to using developmentally-appropriate disciplinary strategies in place of punishment.

Team/Club culture
Coaches establish a positive learning environment defined by cohesiveness, shared understandings and on-field success.

The CALM model is an approach for responding to sensitive or disconcerting disclosures:
C: Create a safe environment
A: Ask, Do you feel safe right now?
